Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Snoring

Snoring

Snoring occurs when the muscles of the airway relax too much during sleep, causing the normally open airway to narrow and vibrate as air passes through the soft palate. While occasional snoring is common, loud or chronic snoring can significantly disrupt sleep quality and disturb those around you. In many cases, especially with loud snoring, it can be linked to other sleep-related breathing disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).

Sleep Apnoea
Sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder where breathing pauses or becomes shallow or infrequent during sleep. These breathing interruptions can last anywhere from 10 seconds to 1 minute and may occur 5 to 30 times or more per hour. This condition can lead to poor sleep quality, fatigue, and a higher risk of other health problems if not treated properly.

Common Causes of Snoring

Snoring can be caused by various factors, many of which are related to how the airway functions during sleep.

Here are some common causes:

  1. Allergies: Allergic reactions can lead to nasal congestion, making it harder to breathe through the nose and forcing breathing through the mouth, which increases the likelihood of snoring.
  2. Nasal Congestion: Blocked nasal passages due to colds, sinus infections, or other conditions can lead to snoring as air has to flow through smaller airways.
  3. Swollen Adenoids or Tonsils: In children, enlarged tonsils or adenoids can block the airways, contributing to snoring.
  4. Swelling of the Muscular Part of the Roof of the Mouth (Soft Palate): When the muscles in the soft palate relax too much during sleep, it can narrow the airway and cause snoring.
  5. Medications: Certain medications, such as sleeping tablets, can relax the muscles in the throat, increasing the chances of snoring.
  6. Alcohol Consumption: Drinking alcohol relaxes the muscles in the throat, which can increase the likelihood of airway obstruction and snoring.
  7. Being Overweight or Obese: Excess fat around the neck and throat can put pressure on the airway, making it narrower and leading to snoring.
  8. Sleep Position: Sleeping on your back can cause your tongue and throat muscles to relax and fall backward, narrowing the airway and making snoring more likely or louder.

Addressing these causes—whether through lifestyle changes, natural therapies, or medical interventions—can help reduce or eliminate snoring.

How Salt Therapy can help with Snoring

Salt therapy is an effective and 100% natural treatment for relieving the symptoms of snoring in a non-invasive way. By simply sitting in the Salt Rooms, you are exposed to tiny salt particles that work to cleanse and detoxify the respiratory system.

As you breathe normally in the Salt Rooms, these microscopic salt particles reach both the upper and lower airways.

Salt naturally possesses anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-histamine properties that provide the following benefits:

  • Killing germs and bacteria that contribute to inflammation and excessive mucus production.
  • Improving lung function by loosening mucus and promoting a cleaner respiratory system.
  • Enhancing nasal breathing and reducing snoring by clearing nasal airways and improving airflow.
  • Strengthening the immune system and reducing reliance on medications.

Through consistent salt therapy, many people experience improved sleep quality and a reduction in snoring, ultimately leading to better overall health.
